TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers’ Federation has urged the State government to introduce an upward revision in the procurement price for milk, taking into consideration the spiralling rise in the prices of cattle-feed. Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, the state president of the federation K. Mohamad Ali said that the present procurement price ranged anywhere between Rs. 12 and Rs. 13, depending upon the quality of milk. It wanted an increase by at least Rs. 4 for cow-milk and Rs. 6 for ox-milk. He said that the cattle-feed being supplied by even the state government-run Aavin had registered a sharp hike from Rs. 390 last year to Rs. 504 a bag this year, necessitating a higher investment for the milk producers. He also wanted regularisation of services of an estimated 25,000 temporary employees attached to 7,000 primary cooperative milk producers’ societies who were each drawing a monthly salary of about Rs. 3,000. Mr. Mohamad Ali wanted subsidy to be released to the primary societies for toning up their efficiency. The state government should also share the insurance premium for milch animals. While the Centre contributed 50 per cent of the premium, the livestock owners had to bear the balance. Women members of self-help groups and mini-dairy owners taking bank loans, were finding it to difficult to remit the premium. He hoped that the State Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan would resolve their grievances.
