MADURAI: An armed gang, posing as policemen, stopped a car on the ring road at around 2 a.m. on Sunday and forcibly took away their jewels and fled the spot in a car. Police said T. Lingaraj (40) of Porur in Chennai had been to Tuticorin and Kanyakumari a few days ago with his family members. He was returning to Chennai. A four-member gang intercepted the car near Karuvelampatti Pass. The driver was told that the vehicle had to be checked. Even as the passengers were alighting, they were attacked by the gang. Within a few minutes, the valuables including gold jewels weighing 31 sovereigns, seven mobile phones, video camera, among others, were snatched from them. On information, Superintendent of Police M. Manohar visited the spot. Tirunagar police have registered a case of robbery. Special teams are on the look out for the robbers. Meanwhile, at around 6 a.m., the police received information that a car with Chennai registration was found abandoned near Harveypatti here. Based on the identification of the complainant, police said that a check revealed that the baggage inside the vehicle was there. Mr. Manohar said that the Finger Print Bureau team lifted five fingerprints from the abandoned vehicle. Special teams are examining the case. “We have gathered some vital clues about the robbers and are looking out for suspects who follow this modus operandi.”
