Transco to upgrade substations

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTransco) has reportedly decided to enhance the capacities of at least three 132/33 KV substations in the city, in a bid to bolster the doddering supply marked by unannounced power cuts and load relief.

According to sources from the CPDCL, the corporation has decided to enhance the transformer capacities of Chandrayangutta and Erragadda substations, while keenly considering the upgrading of the Gunrock substation.

Chandrayangutta substation will have a new transformer of 80 MVA capacity added to the existing three of 50 MVA. At Erragadda, one among the three 50 MVA transformers will be replaced with an 80 MVA transformer.

Upgrading of the Chandrayangutta substation will bring relief to Bandlaguda substation too which is forced to share additional loads from the former. Similarly, enhancement of capacities at Erragadda substation will relieve Jubilee Hills and Madhapur substations to some extent.

Augmentation of the Gunrock substation by replacing a 50 MVA transformer with that of 80 MVA is being considered by the authorities, sources informed.

Upgrading of the Extra High Tension substations -- a long felt need vis-À-vis the spiralling demand -- could resolve issues pertaining to the power distribution network in and around the city. However, the current decision to enhance the transformer capacities will only be a far cry from the estimated needs, officials says.

According to recent estimates by the CPDCL Metro Zone, about seven 132/33 KV substations in the city deserve capacity enhancement keeping in view the loads they bear. They include those at Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Gunrock, Chilkalguda, Chandrayangutta, Shivrampally, and Asifnagar. Most of these substations have power transformers of 50 MVA capacity, while a few are of only 31.5 MVA.
