Many complain of milk curdling after heating

Staff Reporter

‘I had to throw away milk which split after boiling’

Residents argue with milk booth personnel

‘Matters have improved over the weekend’

Bangalore: Several people in parts of the city had no choice but to cry over split milk since last week thanks to power cuts.

Chandrika Y., a resident of Vijayanagar, told The Hindu that for the past few days, the milk that was supplied to her curdled on heating.

“On Thursday, I had no choice but to throw away three litres of milk which split after I boiled it. The milk smelled strange when I cut open the packet on Friday morning. As expected, the milk split,” she said.

She said that she went to a Nandini milk parlour near her house to buy fresh milk only to find other residents of the area arguing with the person in the booth.

“He said that several people had been complaining about the milk splitting. He called the supplier, who told him that there were problems at the storage unit due to frequent power cuts,” she added.

Though matters have improved a bit over the weekend, the milk does not smell fresh and there is an unappetising smell, she said.

When contacted, Managing Director of the Karnataka Milk Federation I.R. Ramalinge Gowda said that there were problems caused due to frequent power cuts at the Mandya Milk Union.

“We have received complaints. On Thursday, there was no power supply for the entire day.

“The diesel generator at the union was not enough to run the operations all through the day. The union faced similar problem on Friday,” he said.

He said that officials at the union had tried to hire another diesel generator to ensure that there were no problems.

“The State is reeling under a power crisis. We cannot blame anyone or complain about the situation. We will have to manage the show and we are trying to make alternative arrangements,” he added.
