MADURAI: An action plan is being prepared by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for all the ‘Million Plus’ cities in the country at a meeting to be held in Kochi on July 7 and 8. Various components of the SSA and the implementation of ‘Education for All’ programmes in the cities with a population of 10 lakh and above would be discussed during the two-day meeting, an official source said on Saturday. From Tamil Nadu, officials from three cities -- Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore -- will participate in the meeting which is being organised by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. According to the SSA authorities, the meeting will come out with a focused ‘urban planning’ for 35 cities whose population has crossed one million. “As per the information received, a thorough planning exercise would be done in consultation with State-level officials for 2009-10,” an official said here. The four broad goals of ‘Education for All’ programme will be analysed in the context of its implementation in urban areas and cities. Ensuring that children are put in schools at the right age, gender equity, universal retention/ preventing dropouts and maintaining quality of education will be some of the SSA objectives that would come up for deliberation. The meeting will lay emphasis on ‘access to education’ for all children. Two officials each from Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore are attending the ‘Million Plus Cities’ meeting besides a senior State-level official.
