HYDERABAD: Sanitation work in the twin cities is going to get affected with all the major workers unions excepting AITUC going ahead with their indefinite stir from tomorrow 6 a.m. onwards. Close to 5,000 sanitary workers are expected to participate in the stir being taken up in protest against GHMC’s pact with Ramky to take up the Integrated Solid Waste Management Project, according to Sankar, Secretary, Bharatiya Mazdoor Employees Union. The unions charge is that the municipal corporation is going to hand over the entire municipal solid waste management to the private firm including its transport fleet jeopardising the employment of the private contract labour. Earlier, Commissioner S.P. Singh held talks with striking workers as well as his senior staff to find an amicable solution but they were not fruitful. The result was he had come out with alternative arrangements to lift and transport garbage. All the Zonal Commissioners’ have been directed to hire tippers and engage as many workers as required to ensure garbage is lifted from all places without inconveniencing the public. Mr. Singh also appealed to resident welfare associations and self help groups in slums to motivate public in not throwing garbage on the streets. Referring to the deal with Ramky, he said GHMC has proposed to implement the governing laws of solid waste management following the Supreme Court orders in a scientific method.
