NEW DELHI: Continuing their dream run, Aswin Jayaram and Padmini Rout posted two crucial victories to stay ahead in their respective sections of the Asian junior chess championship at Colombo on Sunday. Aswin, aiming to retain the title won in Chennai last December, defeated second seed B. Adhiban in the fifth round and returned to tame top seeded Iranian Homayoon Toufighi in the sixth. He enjoys a one-point lead over Kazakhstan’s Amanov Zhanibek. Padmini defeated National junior girls’ champion and top seed Soumya Swaminathan to reach six points from as many rounds. Earlier in the day, Padmini had got the better of ninth seeded Iranian Minoo Asgarizadeh. The results (involving Indians): Open: Sixth round: Aswin Jayaram (6) bt Homayoon Toufighi (Iri, 4); P. Karthikeyan (4) lost to Zhanibek Amanov (Kaz, 5); P. Saravana Krishna (3.5) lost to Asghar Golizadeh (4.5). N. Srinath (3) lost to M.R. Lalith Babu (4.5); Ali Faghirnavaz (Iri, 4) bt B. Adhiban (3); V. Vishnu Prasanna (3.5) drew with M. Shyam Sundar (3.5); Anwesh Upadhyaya (3) lost to Semetey Tologontegin (Kgz, 4); Shreyansh Daklia (3) bt Dinushka Jayasuriya (2.5). Fifth round: Adhiban lost to Aswin; Shyam lost to Homayoon; Srinath lost to Karthikeyan; Lalith drew with Saravana; Amanov bt Anwesh; Tologontegin drew with Vishnu;Kalana Kuruwitage (Sri) bt Daklia.
