Number of non-fatal accidents has gone down by 27.05 per cent compared to last year NEW DELHI: The Delhi traffic police have issued more than 17 lakh challans for various traffic violations in the last six months in the Capital, which is over 50 per cent more than the challans issued for the corresponding period last year. The figures show that the number of challans issued in the past six months for stop line violations have increased by 86.97 per cent, red light jumping by 32.73 per cent, dangerous driving by 105.69 per cent, improper parking by 87.62 per cent, defective number plates by 170.79 per cent, use of tinted glass by 547.59 per cent, drunken driving by 48.11 per cent and over-speeding by 15.27 per cent. The total number of traffic prosecutions has increased from 16,21,074 for the first six months last year to 23,34,783 for the corresponding period this year. Addressing a press conference here, Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said that the Safe Pedestrian Week observed in June first week had shown 32 per cent decline in number of fatal accidents in the first fortnight and six per cent decline in the second week of the month. The police had issued 1,550 challans for stop line violation, 10,625 for red light jumping, 8,320 for improper parking, 353 for jay walking, 4,659 for dangerous driving, 206 for drunken driving and 2,793 for over-speeding during the Safe Pedestrian Week. A total of 1,001 fatal accidents have been reported in the first six months this year compared with 1,015 for the corresponding period last year. The number of non-fatal accidents has gone down by 27.05 per cent for this period. Mr. Dadwal also mentioned about several high-tech programmes, including the state-of-the-art Cyber Highway and Intelligent Traffic System, Fingerprint Analysis and Criminal Tracing System and E-challaning through GPRS-based system, which have been envisaged and are at conceptual and implementation stages.
