All smiles: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Rajahmundry MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar with former minister Jakkampudi Rammohan Rao at a Congress party meeting in Rajahmundry on Sunday.

Rajahmundry: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy exhorted the party leaders and activists to strive to retain the confidence people reposed in the Congress party in the 2009 elections and said their aim should be to secure a comfortable victory in the next elections, unlike what happened now. Though the party came to power, it was not a convincing triumph. Next time it should be a cakewalk, for which collective efforts have to be made, from a village sarpanch to Chief Minister himself, he asserted.

Addressing a party meeting at Anam Kalakendram here on Sunday, Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy said it should ensure that the Congress party got at least 51 per cent votes in the elections scheduled for 2014 and the party’s rank and file should remember that the party has just scraped through with slender margins in many constituencies.

That should not be the case and the responsibility rests on the shoulders of every one in the party irrespective of his/her designation.

Impracticable promises

Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy indicated that the party’s average show in the 2009 elections was due to the cinema glamour and a slew of impracticable promises made by the Opposition parties. Since the people reposed their confidence in the Congress party, the opportunity should not be squandered.

Indiramma village committees were being constituted to oversee the development works and to act as bridges between the party cadre and the people. Members of Parliament, MLAs and all other people’s representatives have to bear the responsibility to achieve all-round progress.

The Chief Minister observed that the Indiramma housing scheme did not earn goodwill for the party to the extent it desired due to several loopholes in its execution. Whether it was Indiramma or any other scheme, there should be no scope for complacency in implementation issues.

In East Godavari district, Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy observed, the party would have won more than 11 Assembly seats had its leaders and cadre worked in unison and ensured foolproof execution of welfare schemes. It should not be the case hereafter lest the non-performing ones should be sidelined, he gave a stern warning.

Members of Parliament Vundavalli Arun Kumar and M.M. Pallam Raju, Ministers P. Subhaschandra Bose, P. Viswaroop and P. Ramachandra Reddy, MLCs, MLAs and other representatives of the ruling party took part.
