State must help

Governments must find ways to ensure education to the poor and brilliant children and better medical care to the common people.

With brilliant but poor students, like M. Nagesh of Adilabad district who secured a seat in BITS after scoring good marks in Intermediate, not able to pursue higher studies as they are not able to pay the high fee in private and corporate colleges, the Government should step in and pay the fee or take the help of philanthropic individuals and companies to bear the cost.

The government must also decide the fee at a reasonable level for every kind of treatment and test in the private and corporate hospitals so that the commonman is also able to get treatment.

It should talk with the managements of these hospitals to decide the fee and bring in a legislation if needed.

Security check at parking place

Vehicles parked at the parking area of Visakhapatnam Railway Station are not checked and this provides an opportunity for the terrorists to create violence by leaving explosives-laden vehicles without any hindrance. People engaged by the parking contractor stops every vehicle going out of the parking lot without fail to collect the parking fee but no one bothers to check the vehicle when it is coming in or going out. Railway authorities could instruct the contractor to arrange for inspection of vehicles coming in and going out of the parking area.

Badi Baata not successful

Many children in the 5-14 years age group in the State, in the slums and rural areas, are not going to school and their parents are also not aware of the value of education and engage them in agriculture or make them work in shops, etc., which is only increasing the number of child labourers.

During the Badi Baata programme, the officials take special care and put children in schools but the children did not continue with the school and drop out soon after the government programme is over. The people should sincerely feel that AP should be a 100 per cent literacy State and also make it child labour-free. The teachers have a major role in this effort.

Security for women

Crimes, especially against women, are on the rise in the city mainly due to raising unemployment and recession. Some youth take to crime to make quick money.

The situation warranted intensifying patrolling by the police, particularly in vulnerable areas. A help line could be created so that people could report about suspects.

Quality policing is needed. Women are soft targets and they are being attacked at home, on the road and at work places. Awareness programmes should be conducted for women not to allow strangers inside their houses, avoid display of jewellery in public places, etc.

Fate of park in a posh colony

The park in sector XII of MVP Colony has been converted into a public latrine.

This is the condition in an area which is claimed to be a posh colony. The area in front of the local Sanitary Inspector’s office is also not spared. Many times the residents complained to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation authorities but no action has been taken.
