BANGALORE: The divine Ella Fitzgerald loved her man who sang off-key and so did a whole lot of shoppers here in Bangalore.

The city sees many events each day but there are some that are so intrinsically fun-filled that they elicit smiles from everyone, even the organisers themselves. The Best Bathroom Singer, an innovative and fun-filled event, was held at The Home Town, Marathalli, on Saturday as part of its ongoing shopping festival.

“This innovative concept was born out of a desire to give even the bad singers a chance, considering that good singers get so many platforms. We just wanted to have some fun,” Shruthi Rashinkar, Marketing Executive, Home Town, said.

The contestants ranged from homemakers, marketing executives to IT professionals. RJ Rohit from 92.7 BIG FM, who was the judge, urged participants to “sound similar to a donkey” and “to imagine that they are in a bathroom with clothes on”. Entrants were judged on their confidence level, appropriate use of props and on being the “real bathroom singer”. The props that could be used were a mirror, bathtub, commode, and a shower cubicle among others. Participants sang the old Hindi rock ‘n’ roll number “Aa aa aaja...” immortalised by the great Rafi and Shammi Kapoor. Only, they were seated on the commode and crooned to themselves in the shower cubicle. sending the audience clutching their stomachs and wiping tears of merriment. Raju Philip, adjudged the Best Bathroom Singer, won a gift voucher of Rs. 5,000 from Home Town. He said he was pleased as he had done many stage shows even in his college days. His impressions of actors such as Shatrughan Sinha and Sanjay Dutt were an instant hit with the audience.
