Vedic mathematics getting popular among students

CUTTACK: Approaching various arithmetical calculations through the ancient formulae of Vedic mathematics is now getting popular among school and college students. Instead of conventional approach, the students, who are preparing for various engineering and banking examinations are now keen to learn various sutras of Vedic mathematics, as these formulae are easy to understand and quick to solve the sums.

Looking at the interest among students in this ancient approach to mathematics, some colleges are thinking of introducing self-financing course in Vedic mathematics. “We are planning to introduce a self-financing course on the subject after seeing the tremendous response from the students”, said a mathematics teacher of local J K B K College.

The sutras of Vedic mathematics would certainly improve the numerical skill of the students and this is also a healthy practice to promote general and transferable skills of the students, the teachers opine.

“Instead of conventional methods to approach basic mathematical calculations, I find the Vedic mathematics sutras more convenient and practical”, says a Plus II science student of the college who is preparing for engineering entrance examinations next year.

So was the feeling of a graduate from Ravenshaw University, Rajdeep Nanda, who is preparing for bank PO examination soon.

Vedic mathematics is the name given to ancient system of mathematics with a unique technique of calculations based on simple rules to solve problems of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, says Nalini Kanta Mishra.

Mr. Mishra, currently working as a mathematics and computer expert of Board of Secondary Education, Orissa, says the Vedic mathematics system is based on 16 Vedic sutras or aphorisms, which are actually word formulae describing natural ways of solving a whole range of mathematical problems. He says this concept was perhaps first begun in Orissa. He attributes this to the fact that the first book on the subject was rediscovered from the ancient Indian scriptures between 1911 and 1918 by Shri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji, the Shankaracharya f Gobardhan Peeth at Puri.
