Howrah bus accident toll rises to 12

Ananya Dutta

KOLKATA: The death toll of Saturday’s bus accident in Howrah rose to 12 on Sunday, even as several of those admitted to hospital were still in critical condition.

Sources at the Howrah General Hospital said several of those admitted to the hospital were in a critical state, but hospital authorities and the police have managed to identify all the victims of the tragedy.

The accident occurred on Saturday when a minibus veered off the Bankim Setu, a bridge near Howrah Station, breaking through the concrete railings and falling onto the railway tracks 35 feet below. Nine of the passengers had been declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police sources said the inquiry into the incident was complete, but its contents have not been made public yet.
