NEW DELHI: The project for widening and improving the UP Link Road to decongest traffic flow near the Akshardham Temple and the adjoining Commonwealth Games Village site has gathered momentum with Noida-bound traffic from the Akshardham side being diverted on to an additional new road near the Mayur Vihar Phase I crossing from this Sunday. The diversion would pave the way for the construction of a three-lane single flyover from July 7 at the Mayur Vihar Phase-I crossing. This project on completion by its scheduled date of January 2010 would eliminate the red light there and offer a near barrier-free movement from Shanti Van. According to the Public Works Department, work on the flyover was scheduled to have begun earlier. “Since the flyover was to be built over an existing road we could not begin till arrangements were in place to divert the traffic by constructing an additional new road. This new road of 500 metres running parallel to the Mayur Vihar side is now ready to handle the diverted traffic,” said a senior PWD official. “This means that Noida-bound traffic from Delhi on approaching Mayur Vihar would now be blocked before the Mayur Vihar Phase I red light and diverted via the newly constructed road running parallel to Mayur Vihar to merge into the main road at the same red light,” he added. After giving the public time to get used to this diversion, the PWD would be extending the diversion by cordoning off traffic beyond the Mayur Vihar Phase I traffic signal after July 20.
