MAHABUBNAGAR: Tension prevailed in Shadnagar town for some time on Saturday following heated exchanges between police and TRS activists when the police tried to arrest party MLAs T. Harish Rao and Etala Rajender and ex-MLA Nayini Narsimha Reddy. Police resorted to lathi charge on the agitating TRS activists who staged a ‘rasta roko’ at the bus station crossroads to register their protest against the arrest of the party’s local leaders, including S. Ibrahim. They were arrested following a complaint lodged with the Shadnagar town police on Friday night by Rajan, Manager of Sheethal Steel company, that some TRS workers, led by Ibrahim, attacked their factory and damaged furniture and other material. Residents and TRS leaders complained that smoke emanating from the factory was polluting the neighbourhood and asked the management to follow pollution control methods or close down the factory. As the management did not comply, the TRS activists attacked the factory. However, the management alleged that Ibrahim and his followers attacked the factory when they refused to pay Rs. 10 lakh as bribe. On learning about the arrests, TRS leaders from Hyderabad rushed to Shadnagar and staged a ‘rasta roko’ demanding their release. The activists resisted when police tried to vacate them from the crossroads. During the scuffle, DSP Bapu Reddy was pushed down leading to the lathi charge by police. TRS workers alleged that the DSP assaulted Mr. Harish Rao.The DSP, who initially pleaded that he did not hit the MLA, apologised to the latter.
