Snatched gold chains recovered

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Gold chains weighing 950 grams, snatched by a gang of four in the past nine months in and around the city, were recovered by the police on Saturday. The four were arrested last week and the recovery was made based on their confession.

Syed Haji, leader of the gang, used to ride pillion and snatch chains from women while his associate rode the bike, Hyderabad Additional Commissioner (Crimes) K. Narsimha Reddy, told a press conference. Haji, one of the prime accused in the sensational Shanti Fireworks burning case, was allegedly involved in a murder case too. He was arrested several times earlier. While, in jail he met Mohd. Dastagir, Mohd. Azeem and Mohd. Osman and they decided to form a gang and resort to chain snatching.

After coming out on bail in September 2008, they started snatching chains and had struck at 34 places in different parts of the city.

The gang used to steal motorcycles and use them to commit the offence. Azeem was allegedly involved in two murders.

East Zone DCP Shiva Shankar Reddy appealed to people to alert the police immediately after a chain snatching incident.
