COIMBATORE: The State Government disbursed Rs. 248 crore assistance to farmers and farm workers through the welfare boards last year, said Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the new building of Narasimanaickenpalayam town panchayat and distributing assistance under various welfare schemes, he said that the State had 26 welfare boards, including for farmers, weavers, tribal and transgenders.

Through these, assistance was given for various purposes, including education of the members’ children, marriage and old age pension.

The Minister said Tamil Nadu had over 500 town panchayats.

The building for Narasimanaickenpalayam town panchayat had been built at a cost of Rs. 31 lakh. Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisamy said the State Government had waived Rs. 7,000 crore farm loans, played an important role in abolition of Cenvat for the textile sector and given free power for agriculture. These measures had benefited this region tremendously.

M. Kannappan, former Minister, said Tamil Nadu was a model State for several schemes.

Collector P. Umanath said 1,700 television sets and 1,300 LPG stoves were distributed at the function on Saturday. The administration would ensure that all the beneficiaries in the district received assistance.
