VISAKHAPATNAM: Minister for Major Industries Kanna Lakshminarayana inaugurated a pipeline laid from Town Service Reservoir (TSR) to Kommadi at the TSR premises at Dwarakanagar on Saturday. The pipeline work taken up at a cost of Rs.23.40 crores is meant to provide protected drinking water to the outlying areas merged in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation(GVMC) under JNNURM. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lakshminarayana said Visakhapatnam was fast developing with the setting up of a second port, international airport and SEZ. He said the State Government was committed to overall development of the city in a planned manner. Development works worth Rs.1,500 crores were under various stages of execution by the GVMC and the State Government was contributing 20 per cent of the funds. He distributed cheques to 125 women’s groups under the ‘pavala vaddi’ scheme. A total amount of Rs. 65 lakhs was distributed as loans. Minister for Tribal Welfare P. Balaraju said BRTS works, drains and housing were being given top priority in the city. He announced that the Chief Minister would lay the foundation for various development works, to be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 242 crores, for the areas merged in GVMC on the Gajuwaka side on July 12. Mayor P. Janardhana Rao recalled that the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had laid the foundation for the TSR – Kommadi pipeline work that was taken up 18 months ago. The project would envisage the provision of four MGD to two lakh people. Municipal Commissioner B. Sridhar briefed about the development works taken up in GVMC. MLAs Dronamraju Srinivas, Ch. Venkatramayya, and Panchakarla Ramesh Babu, Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai, Additional Commissioner N. Krishna Murthy, Chief Engineer B. Jayaram Reddy, S.E. C.G.K. Raju, E.E. D. Venu Gopal and UCD Project Director Srikanth Prabhakar were among those who attended.
