Missing remand prisoner traced
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: A remand prisoner who was found missing from the Puzhal Central Prison here on Friday was traced after six hours of intensive search.
According to sources in the Prison Department, Venkatesan, who was lodged in the prison in connection with a cheating case, was found missing from Prison I at 4.30 p.m. on Friday. He was last seen taking food from the counter.
Under instructions of the Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons, R. Duraisamy, special teams were formed to locate him. Around 10 p.m., Venkatesan was found hiding behind a watch tower. On interrogation, he told jail warders that he had planned to escape after midnight by scaling the watch tower.
Mr. Duraisamy said the accused had managed to come out of the block where he was lodged. Action would be taken against two jail warders on charges of dereliction of duty. “It is impossible to escape from the Puzhal prison. Besides six watch towers that are manned round-the-clock, we have two high-rise compound walls with one covered by a live-fence. We also have external surveillance teams,” he said.
