Tiruchi
Immediate: Transport Minister K.N. Nehru giving away the patta to a beneficiary in Tiruchi on Saturday. TIRUCHI: A total of 42 residents of Wards 54 and 55 in the Ko. Abhishekapuram zone of the Corporation were the largest beneficiaries of the ‘Makkalai Thaedi’ programme, a special ‘grievances redress day’ meeting organised at Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School at Puthur on Saturday. For, shortly after submitting their grievance-petitions, they got the requisite orders from the Corporation officials on-the-spot. Highlighting the success of the programme, the Transport Minister, K. N. Nehru, said that as many as 2,000 petitions were received on the occasion of which the Corporation had issued 42 orders. Three persons got the certificates from the Birth and Death Certificates wing; 19 others got fresh assessment of property-tax; 10 benefited through name-transfer orders in property, water supply; while one got the order for the vacant site tax. Mr. Nehru said that since many petitions pertained to the demand for free house-site pattas in and around the Corporation limits, efforts would be taken to acquire lands for allotment to the needy. It took at least six months’ time for identifying a suitable site in the periphery of the Corporation. The delay would be avoided if the lands were acquired. Mr. Nehru, who later gave away the certificates and other assistance to the beneficiaries, said that he received as many as 3,544 petitions during the earlier phase of the programme held last month and assistances worth Rs. 3crore were distributed today. “The Revenue officials have taken quick action in allotting house-site pattas to 175 persons; orders for name-transfer in the ‘patta’ for 18 beneficiaries; ration cards to 125 petitioners and Old Age Pension for 115 senior citizens.” He also gave away cheques to the tune of Rs.2.52 lakh towards the second instalment to 14 beneficiaries under the ‘Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme.’ Each of them got Rs.18,000. District Collector T. Soundiah; District Revenue Officer V. Dakshinamurthy; Mayor S. Sujatha; Corporation Commissioner T.T. Balsamy and Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhaggan were present.
