Perseverance pays: Lok Satta Party chief Jayaprakash Narayan with school students at Hydernagar, Kukatpally on Saturday.

Hyderabad: At the realisation of their long-pending dream for basic amenities such as drinking water, toilets, better flooring and whitewash, the students of Government Primary School, Hydernagar could hardly conceal their elation and smiles.

Thanks to the efforts of Lok Satta activists and philanthropists, the amenities were provided to the children in a fortnight at a cost of Rs.60,000. The once dreary-looking school now sports a tidy look and offers better ambience for its 272 students and teaching staff.

“We used to suffer due to poor amenities in the school. To this extent, students and staff used to request nearby residents for permission to use the toilets in their homes,” said Pramila, the school ayah.

Lok Satta activists visited the school as part of a survey to assess the facilities in government schools last month. Moved by the pathetic conditions here, they collected donations from philanthropists and took up renovation works.

A committee was constituted with parents, school headmaster and a Lok Satta activist to monitor the facilities provided in the school.

Of the 18 lakh students in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts, two-thirds go to private schools due to lack of basic amenities in government schools, said Lok Satta Party president and Kukatpally MLA, Jayaprakash Narayan, who visited the school on Saturday.

Negligence

Later, Dr. Jayaprakash visited the Zilla Parishad High School at Nizampet following complaints from residents about encroachment of school land by unauthorised persons with the support of politicians. Owing to the negligence of authorities, residential apartments were constructed abutting the school occupying a major part of the school land.

Foundation stone was laid for constructing a school compound wall a couple of years ago but it remains incomplete till date, he informed.

A close to 300 students are crammed into three classrooms, which are in a dilapidated condition. Due to lack of accommodation, nearly 160 students were forced to go to private schools this academic year, he added.

Ready for alliance

The Lok Satta chief on Saturday announced that the party was open to alliance with other political parties, provided the latter agree to work in tandem and keep in tune with LSP agenda for the forthcoming GHMC elections.

Speaking to media persons after visiting the Nizampet government high school, he said the party was giving top priority to issues such as supply of safe drinking water, better traffic and transportation, better drainage facilities and ethical politics. So the political parties wanting to form alliance have to realise these vital issues. Only then they are welcome, he said.
