space gyan: School students watching an exhibit at the astronomy carnival on Saturday. HYDERABAD: An astronomy carnival organised by students of 14 schools in coordination with Kuiper Research and Educational Services Private Limited turned out to be a big draw here on Saturday. As many as 4,000 school children participated in the day-long carnival in which students showcased various science projects. Craters on the moon, working in space, planet mania and 3D gallery were some of the projects displayed and explained by the young students guided by their teachers. The special attraction of the carnival was the launch of first-of-its-kind hydro power rocket. Students of Hyderabad Public School, Ramanthapur, came up with a concept – satellite orbiting moon – developed by C. Madhulika and Samuel Paul, both seventh standard students. ReplicaSchool children from DAV Public School in Safilguda developed another model – Mangalayaan-2025 – to know more about Mars. Another seventh standard student Anushka Patnaik showcased a replica of the INSAT-IA satellite launched in April 1982 to fulfil the telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology and search and rescue needs of the country. Kuiper business development officer Souvik Saha said the event was organised to create awareness among children. He said space clubs were constituted in 14 schools with students as its members. “We also organised inter-city astronomy quiz and model making competitions for space club member schools at the carnival,” he added.
