Medicos to continue protest

Madurai Bureau

TIRUNELVELI: Postgraduate students of Tirunelveli Medical College and house surgeons of Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital formed a human chain at Palayamkottai on Saturday demanding better salary and stipend on a par with other States. They said the stir would continue.

While the salary being given to postgraduate students of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (Rs. 49,000), Pondicherry (Rs. 45,000), Chandigarh (Rs. 38,000), Goa (Rs. 33,000), Jharkhand (Rs. 30,000) and all other Indian States are so attractive, the salary being given by the Tamil Nadu Government is only Rs.8,000 in the first year, which rises to Rs.9,000 in the third year. In fact, the salary being given for PG medical students in Tamil Nadu is the lowest in the entire country.

Similarly, house surgeons are being given a stipend of Rs. 12,000 in West Bengal and Karnataka, Rs. 11,700 in New Delhi, Rs. 10,700 in JIPMER, Puducherry, and AIIMS, New Delhi, and Rs. 8,500 in Banaras Hindu University while it is only Rs. 4,500 here, again the lowest in the country. “While giving admission only to the best brains in the medicine course, the State Government is paying the lowest salary or stipend in the entire country to the house surgeons and PG students.”
