TIRUCHI: A total of 340 candidates completed the summer course on DTP, Tally-9, Basic Computer Operation, C, C++, Computer Hardware, Animation, Web Design, Cell Phone Servicing, Refrigeration & Air Conditioner Mechanism, Spoken English and Music Instruments – Key Board, Guitar Courses – conducted by the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), Bharathidasan University. The purpose of the course conducted from April 3 to June 3 was to enable youth to spend the vacation purposefully, equipping themselves with employable skills, according to the IECD Director K. Parthasarathy. The courses were offered for student and non-student youth, housewives, and school and college-going students. The minimum qualification prescribed was a pass or fail in standards V to X depending on the course. The Institute offered 50 percent scholarship for the SC/ST candidates, 25 percent for MBC & BC candidates, 100 per cent scholarship for the differently abled candidates. University staff and their wards were given 50 per cent scholarship. The Vice-Chancellor, M. Ponnavaikko, handed over the course completion certificates to the candidates at the ‘passing out ceremony’ held recently. Delivering a special address on the occasion, Prof. Ponnavaikko said that skill-based education was vital for employability. The IECD, he said, conducts 41 types of skill-based courses for the benefit of school drop-outs and unemployed youths.
