“Raise IT exemption limit to Rs. 2 lakh”

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu has appealed to Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to raise the Income Tax exemption limit to Rs.2 lakh an annum.

In a pre-budget representation to the Minister, S. Pushpavanam, Secretary of the council, also urged him to consider introducing a national health service on the model of the service in the United Kingdom to provide health care at nominal cost. Corporates may be levied a national health service tax, he suggested.

Funds for consumer organisations

The funds from Consumer Welfare Fund should be allotted to consumer organisations first and then only to universities, colleges or researchers.

The council supported Dr. Yashpal’s suggestion on abolition of University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education, and Medical Council of India and creation of a new regulatory body with sufficient powers to regulate admission procedures.

Judicial accountability should be ensured by providing promotion and cash incentive to judges for speedy disposal of cases.

Steps should be taken to privatise select routes of the Railways to offer competitive services, Mr. Pushpavanam said.
