Plea to rectify disparity in revised pay scales

Staff Reporter

Engineers’ federation plans rally on July 17 in Chennai

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Engineers’ Federation has urged the State government to rectify what it called ‘wide disparity’ in the revised pay scales fixed for the engineers of various departments in the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. It has planned to launch a stir by taking out a rally in Chennai on July 17, in support of this demand.

A decision to this effect was taken at its Tiruchi regional general body meeting held here on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons at the end of the meeting, its president R. Rajasekaran said that a total of 7,000 engineers in various cadres – Assistant Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineer, Executive Engineer and Chief Engineer, had been hit hard by the lower pay scales fixed by the State government following the implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. Officials who were drawing a similar or even lesser pay had benefited with a higher pay now, he said.

For instance, prior to the recommendations, an Assistant Engineer and a Section Officer at the Secretariat were drawing the same scale of pay in the slab starting from Rs.6,500. But, after the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, the pay structure for the Section Officer had been fixed at Rs.8,000. But, no corresponding hike had been effected for the Assistant Engineer.

The Tiruchi Region secretary, M. Bakthavathsalam, said that the federation had already sent telegrams to the Chief Minister. Individual memorandum by each engineer had also been despatched by post to the Public Grievances Cell of the office of the Chief Minister.

The Joint secretary S. Sivakumar said that the irony was that the revised pay scale for Office Superintendents, who were hitherto drawing a lesser pay, has exceeded the Assistant engineer’s pay scale.

The Federation demanded the revision with a basic pay fixed at Rs.15,600 for the Assistant Engineer, Assistant Executive Engineer and Executive Engineer, with a grade pay suited for each category; and Rs.18,400 for the Chief Engineer.
