THINGS LOKING UP: Public Works Department Minister Durai Murugan, inspecting the construction of aqueduct for the 58-Village Canal scheme at Achanampatti on Friday. MADURAI: The Public Works Department Minister, Durai Murugan, has instructed the officials to complete 58-village canal scheme by September. Inspecting the construction works in Madurai and Dindigul districts on Friday, the Minister said that it was only because of the inordinate delay of four years by the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government in sanctioning the revised estimate the work got stalled. Eighty nine per cent of the work to construct 27-km of flood carrier, including aqueduct for 2,650 metres, with branch canals for over 22 km to irrigate 58 villages in Usilampatti Taluk has been completed. “It is a major work to construct aqueduct which is at the height of 18 metres in some places,” Mr. Durai Murugan said. The flood carrier would cater to 29 rain-fed tanks and three new tanks created under the scheme. It would irrigate 2,284 acres of land and produce 2,864 tonnes of additional foodgrains, he said. The work was first sanctioned by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1996 at a cost of Rs. 33 crore. The revised estimate is Rs. 74.60 crore. Two aqueducts would be constructed for 1,250 metres and 1,400 metres respectively. The Revenue Minister, I. Periyasamy, PWD Chief Engineer (Madurai Region), P. Ramamoorthy, Superintending Engineer, A. Chandrasekaran, and Executive Engineers, V. Srinivasagan and S. Chandrasekaran, were present.
