NEW DELHI: In an obvious effort to restore the image of Durand Cup football tournament, two Kolkata clubs, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, have shown their keenness to participate in the prestigious event this year. The Durand Cup is scheduled to be held from September 11. Recently, the national coach Bob Houghton had described the Durand Cup as a ‘stupid’ tournament. He was unhappy with most of his star players having to turn up for their respective clubs. His concerns rose due to fears of injury and fatigue to his players even as he prepares the team for the Asian Cup two years from now. The Durand Cup had been deprived of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the last two years and this edition is expected to attract most of the top sides of the country. The cream of Goan football will be on view in the Durand Cup this year. — Special Correspondent
