Coimbatore: During the current fiscal it has been proposed to provide financial assistance to 1,695 women self-help groups (SHGs) benefiting 18,998 members, said Collector P. Umanath on Tuesday. Mr. Umanath was reviewing the functioning of SHGs and Mahalir Thittam. He said that the government had fixed a target of Rs. 23.32 crore as financial assistance for these groups of which Rs. 5.88 crore would be subsidy and Rs. 17.43 crore would be bank loan. As per the instructions of Deputy Chief Minister and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, a sum of Rs. 42 crore was disbursed to 7000 SHGs. Of this, Rs. 10,000 was revolving fund and the loan amount was Rs. 50,000 per SHG. In addition, loan of Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh was disbursed to 214 SHGs totalling Rs. 8 crore. During the last year, 229 SHGs in urban areas and 434 in rural areas were created, thus, totalling 663. During the current year, the government had set aside Rs. 1.17 crore for disbursement of Rs. 10,000 each to 1,177 women SHGs. In total, the women SHGs were likely to get Rs. 7.06 crore. The activities being promoted among the women SHGs would include tailoring, making plates using arecanut leaves, doll making, coir rope making, basket making and running bunk shops. For training alone, a sum of Rs. 58.9 lakh was being earmarked, he said. In the event of trouble in availing subsidy, revolving fund or loan, the Mahalir Thittam officials should intervene and resolve it.
