He was addressing a meeting organised to review the functioning of Micro Level Traffic Planning Study Programme and Golden Hour Trauma Care for accident victims through networking of private hospital ambulances with the police control room. Deputy Commissioners of Police, K. Shanmugavel (Law and Order), P. Nagarajan (Headquarters) took part in the review meeting.

Mr. Mahali pointed out that during the first six months of 2008, the total number of lives lost were 173 while the number of lives lost due to road accidents during the period this year was 146.

The number of deaths due to fatal road accidents had come down by 27. Similarly, the number of non-fatal accidents during the period January to June 2008 was 601 and the same had come down to 375 during the current year.

Thus, registering a fall of 226 cases i.e., 38 per cent overall.

Going by the accident mapping of fatal accident spots on city roads, the statistics reveal that Corporation roads had claimed 58 lives, Avanashi Road and Sathyamangalam Road claimed 20 lives each, while Pollachi Road claimed 14 lives and Tiruchi Road - 10 lives. Palakkad Road witnessed nine deaths, Mettupalayam road - four deaths, three deaths each on Perur Road, L&T Bypass Road and Maruthamalai Road and one life each on Thadagam Road and Kamarajar Road, thus, accounting for 146 deaths on roads due to road accidents.

Of the total 146 deaths, 115 were men and 31 were women, he said.

The fatal accident statistics reveal that motorcycle riders accounted for 48 per cent of the 70 two-wheeler riders killed.

Sixty-six of them were without helmet while four who wore helmets died because they were ran over by vehicles.

In the non-fatal category, of the 229 motorcyclists who sustained injuries in accidents, 175 of them were without helmet.

In the month of June, Kamarajar Road, Thadagam Road and Perur Road remained fatal accident-free.
