School of engineering at Pondicherry University soon

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry University will establish a school of engineering offering two M.Tech programmes in 2010, Vice Chancellor J.A.K. Tareen said on Saturday.

Delivering the convocation address at a private engineering college, he said a building would be built for the school of engineering at the university. “There are seven engineering colleges affiliated to the university. But the university does not have a school of engineering. We will start engineering courses, M.Tech in Electronics and M.Tech. in Nano Sciences, in 2010,” he said. This year the university would introduce a subsidy scheme in the hostels. “A subsidy of Rs. 400 will be given to students to stay in the hostel. Students whose parents’ income is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh a year could apply for the subsidy,” the Vice-Chancellor added. Already, the university had made transportation free for students coming from the town and hostel rooms free for girls. The number of girl students had increased from 18 per cent to 45 per cent of the total, he noted.

Referring to reforms at the university, he said: “There has been an all round overhaul. We’re trying to address several problems at a time – reforming the administration, increasing access, adding courses and laboratories, improving infrastructure, getting more faculty members and using modern technology.”

The university would go for accreditation next year. The Vice-Chancellor hoped it would receive an ‘A’ or ‘A+’ grade. The student strength had increased from 1,400 to 2,800 and was set to go up to 5,000 in the next two years. “The number of faculty members was less than 200. It is 260 now and will increase to 460 in another year,” he said.

Chairman of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Education Trust N. Kesavan and manging director M. Dhanasekaran spoke.
