CHENNAI: Special commando teams, comprising 60 Armed Reserve police constables, will be created at 38 centres across the State, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) K. Radhakrishnan has said. “Members of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT) that already exists in 31 districts and seven Commissionerates will be imparted training in commando operations. Young men in the Armed Reserve strengths will be inducted into the commando teams that will be utilised to handle any emergency. This will enhance our level of preparedness,” he said. More than 7,000 newly recruited police constables, including women, passed out on Friday and will be moved to Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion after a month’s training. Around 200 recruits, who cleared tough physical efficiency parameters and other skill tests such as firing, have been selected for deployment in Special Task Force and Tamil Nadu Commando Force. “We have recruited the best constables. The objective is to infuse young blood into the elite forces. Those aged above 35 years will be moved to the local police,” Mr. Radhakrishnan said. On the possibility of joint exercises with National Security Guard Commandos at the Chennai hub, Mr. Radhakrishnan said a decision would be taken later. “We are already well equipped when it comes to training facilities. Under the Modernisation of Police Force scheme, Tamil Nadu police has latest weapons such as MP-5 Rifle. State-of-the-art infrastructure will be created under the aegis of Mega City Policing Project,” he said.
