Mandatory accreditation of hospitals on the cards

Staff Reporter

Will lead towards improved health care

Need to differentiate will emerge as a prime imperative for hospitals

‘Accreditation and quality are two sides of the same coin’

NEW DELHI: Leading health care and quality professionals on Saturday suggested that mandatory accreditation of hospitals is on the anvil now with health care providers increasingly facing greater competition.

Delegates at a seminar on “Accreditation of Hospitals” organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) agreed that once accreditation becomes widespread, the need to differentiate and establish a favourable price equation will emerge as a prime imperative for hospitals.

They underlined the benefits that accreditation brings to the hospitals in terms of improved care and increased consumer confidence. Appreciating that the concept is still confined to metros, CII health care standardisation and quality sub-committee chairman Dr. Ranjit Roy Chaudhury said: “It is now necessary to look at steps that will carry the process further in semi-urban and rural areas. A five-point agenda outlined by CII for this includes the need for creating awareness among health care providers about the benefits; greater role of the government in accreditation of public hospitals; pre-packaged accreditation programmes to facilitate cost-effective implementation; and the necessity of grading.”

Risk reduction strategy

Quality Council of India secretary-general Girdhar J. Gyani said accreditation and quality are two sides of the same coin.

Dr. Anupam Sibal of Apollo Hospitals described accreditation as a risk reduction strategy. He said as consumer awareness grows, hospitals will not only have to demonstrate a commitment to quality care but also provide comparisons with other hospitals.
