WARANGAL: The Warangal Municipal Corporation is now focussing on collecting pending tax dues of Rs.10 crore from defaulters including government agencies. The government departments owe about Rs. 5 crore while individuals and others owe more than Rs. 6 crore. Municipal Commissioner A. Shivakoti Prasad launched the special drive by personally visiting big defaulters and urging them to clear the dues at the earliest Meanwhile, the municipality has to clear bills amounting to Rs. 18 crore bills of contractors who executed civil works for the corporation. Since, the civic body was unable to pay the contractors, many have stalled the works. A contractor pointed out that none of the contractors were coming forward and the tenders issued by the corporation were not getting any response. “Everybody knows that the corporation does not clear the bills properly. We think it is waste to invest money in such ventures,” he pointed out. He explained that the government had to renotify the tenders repeatedly as no contractor was coming forward . The government’s decision to pay the salaries of the civic staff through the treasury came as a good news for the cash-starved WMC.
