TIRUNELVELI: A spotted deer that strayed into a flour mill at Gangaikondan in search of food and water was rescued by the forest personnel on Saturday. Since the animal had sustained injuries after it was chased by street dogs, it was taken to the veterinary hospital here for treatment. “The animal is out of danger,” a forest department official said. This is the fourth such incident in the past couple of weeks, a period in which two deer were killed outside the Gangaikondan deer park when the animals came out of the boundary in search of food and water. Forest personnel said that there was only one reservoir within the deer park to quench the thirst of over 200 animals which was not adequate and hence the deer moved out of the park in search of food and water. Though the park’s western boundary on the Tirunelveli – Madurai National Highway has been constructed with granite blocks and lime, the compound wall has not been plastered with cement and hence the wall has suffered significant damage at four spots through which the animals can easily come out. “Since the fence on the south, east and northern sides of the park is not so effective enough to stop the deer from moving out, the huge holes on the compound wall on the western side are really a cause for concern,” admitted a forest official, adding that steps would be taken immediately to repair the damaged compound wall.
