DHARMaPURI: As many as 79,304 students studying in Standard VI to VIII in 453 government and aided schools in the district will be screened for refractive error from this month. Collector P. Amutha convened a coordination committee meeting here recently. It was decided to train at least one teacher in a school. Teachers will be given kits to screen the students. Paramedical Ophthalmic Assistants will examine the students and issue prescription to them and the spectacles supplier. Prevalence of flurosis was also discussed at the meeting. The meeting was informed that 94 hamlets had been identified as highly endemic to flurosis in the district. The Health Department would conduct a door-to-door survey about dental, skeletal and non-skeletal flurosis and assess the fluoride level in drinking water in these villages. Training would be given to personnel in the Health Department in diagnosis, prevention treatment, deformity correction, and rehabilitation. A discussion about introducing ENT treatment at the PHC level was also held.
