KYS has highlighted several issues with respect to SC/ST admissions in different colleges Dean denies claims that the process of SC/ST admission was “non-transparent” NEW DELHI: A student outfit, Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), submitted a memorandum to the National Scheduled Castes Commission on Friday alleging “violation of the SC admission rules/regulations and irregularities in the admission process” of such students at Delhi University. KYS has highlighted several issues with respect to SC/ST admissions in different colleges of the University. However, the University has maintained that it has made all possible efforts to help the students from these categories during the admission. “A number of SC/ST students were allotted seats at S.G.T.B. Khalsa College but the college refused admission to some of them, as being a ‘minority institution’ it has not implemented reservation for the Other Backward Classes. Therefore, the total number of seats for SC/ST candidates remained the same as last year (and did not increase in wake of the OBC reservation),” claimed the KYS memorandum. “When these students approached the SC/ST registration centre of the University, they were assured that they would be allotted seats before the second allotment list (to be declared on Saturday). The University did not give admission to all the refusal cases of Khalsa College,” it alleged. However, the University officials have a different story to tell. “We had given a list of increased seats from this academic year to all the colleges, including Khalsa College, much earlier and asked them to tell us about discrepancies, if any. The college authorities never told us that they would be admitting SC/ST students only as per the seats reserved till last year,” said Dean of Students’ Welfare S. K. Vij. As a result, the University allotted seats at S. G. T. B. Khalsa College to SC/ST students in the first allotment list. When that college refused to admit some of these students, the University asked them to write an application and then allocated seats to them in other colleges on the basis of merit. “All those aggrieved students who wrote applications were re-allotted seats. We entertained even those students who did not give their applications within the stipulated time. We wanted to finish the process before the notification of the second SC/ST admission list,” pointed out Prof. Vij. Another University officer reasoned that there was a possibility that some SC/ST students were left out in the re-allotment process as they did not take the “official route”. The Dean also denied claims that the process of SC/ST admission was “non-transparent”.
