Double crown for Praveena

KOLKATA: S. Praveena of Tamil Nadu bagged a double winning the under-16 and under-12 girls’ singles titles in the Calcutta Punjab Club AITA talent series here on Friday.

Praveena, unseeded in both categories, was the biggest surprise of the tournament as she won the under-12 title defeating local favourite and top-seeded Shreya Das 3-5, 4-2, 4-1.

She then showed her mettle again winning the under-16 crown defeating another local girl Priyam Periwal 7-6(3), 6-3. Priyam had beaten top-seeded Tulana Nan in the semifinals. — Principal Correspondent
