Tanishaq shocks Bhat

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Second-seeded Arvind Bhat could not lift his game when challenged, slipping to a 19-21, 16-21 defeat to qualifier K. Tanishaq in men’s singles first round at the second Tata Open all-India badminton tournament at the CCI courts here on Friday.

Bhat gave credit to his Andhra Pradesh opponent for handling the big points well. “The first game was close, I thought he played well to take three points at a time when I had almost come back into the match,” said the National men’s champion, feeling out of sorts in mental preparation.

“I feel fitter than ever before, my pre-match routines are the same but somehow not feeling tuned up in the mind,” he said.

Aggression

Tanishaq stuck to an aggressive game, unaffected by his rival’s reputation. The World No. 27 has put Friday’s loss behind him and is looking ahead towards the World championships next month.

“This is the fourth tournament it has happened. You can’t dwell too much on it. After a week’s break, I will begin training for the Worlds,” said the PSPB player.
