House surgeons take out rally

STIPEND ISSUE: Postgraduate students (non service) and house surgeons taking out a rally in Madurai on Friday.

MADURAI: Postgraduate students (non service) and house surgeons of Madurai Medical College took out a rally in support of their demand to increase the stipend here on Friday.

The rally started from Government Rajaji Hospital and passed through the Collectorate, Gandhi Museum, Tallakulam junction and culminated at the hospital. Three hundred students and house surgeons participated in the rally. Carrying placards, the students raised slogans urging the State government to provide them with a justifiable stipend on par a with other States.

For a postgraduate doctor in Tamil Nadu, the stipend stands at Rs. 8,000, whereas it is Rs.19, 000 in West Bengal, Rs. 18, 500 in Kerala, Rs. 21,000 in Orissa, Rs. 22,000 in Bihar and Rs. 20,000 in Uttar Pradesh

The rally, along with hunger strike by students and house surgeons, entered into the fourth successive day on Friday.
