Plan for ‘adarsh’ railway stations

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Railway Ministry has proposed to make some of the suburban railway stations in the city adarsh (ideal) stations. They will have basic facilities, including drinking water, adequate toilets, catering services, waiting rooms, dormitories, especially for women passengers, and better signage.

Presenting the Railway Budget for 2009-10 in Parliament on Friday, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Ministry had planned to develop 375 stations as ideal stations and had identified 309 of them.

In Chennai, Beach, Chetpet, Park, St.Thomas Mount, Chromepet, and Tambaram in the Beach-Tambaram section, Korukkupet in the Chennai-Ennore section, and Perambur Carriage Works, Avadi, Tiruninravur, Tiruvallur and Tiruvalangadu in the Chennai-Arakkonam section would be developed as ideal stations.

The Minister said it had been planned to start a nursing college and a medical college in Chennai for wards of railway employees, in the public–private partnership mode.
