Frequent ruins: Underground sewer flowing across the Anna Nagar Main Road, which has been dug up following a block in the system in Tiruchi.

TIRUCHI: Leaks and blockages in underground drainage scheme, both in the old and the new sewer systems in the city, appear to be all frequent these days.

Sewer lines have been developing leaks and overflows at several places over the past few months, often forcing motorists and pedestrians to wade through overflowing sewage. Apart from an old sewer system, a new underground drainage scheme, with a capacity of about 23,000 connections, was commissioned recently in the city.

In the latest incidents, a couple of leaks on the pumping mains near Subramaniapuram had caused a disruption in the pumping of sewage to the Panchapur Sewage Treatment Plant from the G. Corner Pumping Station. Engineers of the maintenance wing of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board were working on repairing the pipes. While a leak at one spot had been plugged, repair was underway in another place.

At Anna Nagar, sewage was overflowing from the underground sewer line. The site has been dug up at the spot apparently for repairs, necessitating a diversion of traffic on one of the lanes of the main road for the past three days.

However, this was said to be a line of the old underground system which was under the maintenance of the Corporation.

Over the past few months, manholes have been opened up and dug around in several places to attend to a block or a leak. “The problem has become frequent these days. The Corporation should, if necessary, acquire advanced equipment to repair the faults quickly,” said M. Sekaran, Convenor, Federation of Service and Consumer Organisations.
