TIRUCHI: The Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations has expressed shock and concern over the decision of the Petroleum Ministry to hike the price of petrol and diesel. In a statement issued here, M. Sekaran, convenor of the federation, regretted that the government has allowed the increase, in view of the loss incurred by the oil companies, without considering the huge tax imposed on the products at various levels. The Petroleum Ministry could have requested reduction of the taxes on petroleum produces as the hike in retail price would affect all sections of the people. The hike would lead to a chain reaction and prices of essential commodities would increase further. The government could have waited longer to watch the movement in the world oil trade before hiking the price of petrol and diesel, he said and appealed to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi to review the hike.
