PIL to construct mini flyover in front of HC Bench premises

MADURAI: A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here to construct a mini flyover outside its premises to facilitate easy access to the court campus.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale and Justice T. Raja asked petitioner’s counsel W. Peter Ramesh Kumar to add National Highways Authority of India as a respondent and adjourned the case to June 10.

The Judges said that the State Government officials arrayed as parties in the PIL petition do not have any authority to deal with the matter as the road abutting the Bench premises was a National Highway under the control of NHAI.

“If a bridge can be provided, very good. But only they (NHAI) have to take a decision on the issue. We cannot pass any order without hearing them,” the Chief Justice told the counsel and asked him to include the official concerned.

Petitioner, S. Greesh Kumar, an advocate practising here, said that the lawyers, litigants and court staffers could use the existing road while other vehicle users travelling between Madurai and Melur could be asked to drive on the flyover.

He claimed that such an arrangement would reduce frequent accidents in the vicinity of the court premises and traffic jam caused in front of the main gate to the Bench due to the speed breakers laid on the road.

He also suggested that heavy vehicles could be asked to use only the new four-lane highway between Agricultural College and Research Institute and Sivaganga Road, instead of passing through the Bench.
