MADURAI: The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has come out with a proposal for encouraging local entrepreneurs to start BPOs in rural areas across the State. The model, which turned out to be a success in Krishnagiri district, will be replicated to provide employment to rural youth and also give a fillip to village economy. Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, the Managing Director of ELCOT, Santhosh Babu, said that ELCOT and National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) would be involved in getting projects for the rural BPOs. They would have distinct advantages like ‘no attrition’ and create value for a village, besides creating white collared jobs for the rural work force. Even a school dropout could be employed in rural BPOs and ELCOT would provide training for youth in etiquette, English language and typing. Already, it had trained 4000 persons for Krishnagiri district and 7000 more were undergoing training now. A State-level body would govern the rural BPOs, once the proposal got government nod. The ELCOT, he said, was looking at ‘McDonald’s’ model for the concept that would not make any compromise on quality. Dr. Santhosh Babu appealed to the members of Confederation of Indian Industry, whom he addressed earlier, to go to rural areas to set up IT-related ventures. After getting clearance from government, the rural BPO scheme could be launched in Madurai.
