150 long years of State police

THANJAVUR: Hundreds of college and school students witnessed photo exhibition organised by the Police Department at Deerkasumangali Marriage Hall to celebrate the 150th year of the Tamil Nadu Police on Friday.

Abhay Kumar Singh, Deputy Inspector General of police, Thanjavur Range, inaugurated the exhibition in the presence of Sampath Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Thanjavur district.

Evolution

The exhibition traced the evolution of the department. Changes have come in uniform, vehicles, weapons, detection methods and in the community services rendered by the department.

A police inspector was seen riding a horse in 1892. A sub-inspector was seen sporting a turban in another photo taken in 1955.

In a rare photo, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was wearing a suit along with the then Inspector General of Police F. V. Arul.

The first woman SI’s photo, taken in 1973, is also on display. Also placed was a photo of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit to a police wireless unit in Chennai along with IGP Arul in 1955.

Models of various types of bombs used by terrorists are on display like book bomb, tiffin box bomb and telephone bomb.

Weapons used to search and defuse them like explosive vapour detector and deep search metal detector were also on display. The department’s advice to people on traffic rules, prevention of thefts, avoidance of drunken driving are also on display in the exhibition.

The exhibition will last till Saturday.
