Three IGs for south zone

MADURAI/TIRUNELVELI: For the first time, in the south zone comprising nine districts, there will be three Inspector Generals of Police serving as IGP (south zone), IGP (Madurai city) and IGP (Tirunelveli city) respectively.
The south zone comprises Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts.
Following the promotion of eight IPS officers announced by the State government on Wednesday, Tirunelveli city police Commissionerate, which had its Commissioner in the rank of a Deputy Inspector General of Police, has now been upgraded to the rank of IGP.
The newly promoted IPS officer A.M.S. Gunaseelan will be the second Commissioner to assume office in the rank of an Inspector General of Police. Though IPS officer R. Sekar, then in the rank of IGP, was posted as Commissioner (Tirunelveli city), he functioned for about a week.
While Madurai city has its Commissioner in the rank of IGP since 1996, after the 1997 riots in a few southern districts, the State government formed the south zone and appointed IPS officer K. Vijay Kumar who assumed office as the first Inspector General of Police (south zone). With promotion as IGP, DIG of Police S.S. Krishnamoorthy will take over as IGP south zone from Sanjeev Kumar.
Except Chennai city, all the other city commissionerates in the State (Madurai city, Coimbatore city, Salem city, Tiruchi city and Tirunelveli city) has its Commissioners of Police in the rank of IGP now.
