Exhibition of rare and antique jewellery begins

CHENNAI: If there are few things that become more beautiful with age, jewellery is certainly one of them. Prince Jewellery is conducting ‘Ancient Secrets,’ an exhibition on its collection of rare and authentic antique jewellery. The exhibition, at its Cathedral Road showroom, opened on Friday.

According to a release, the exhibition is the result of meticulous collection of its Chairman Princeson Jose and Sheeba Prince. From extravagance to simplicity, the collection spans a wide range of antique jewellery. It seeks to promote and preserve the rich heritage of the country.

The collection has been sourced from all corners of the country and features resplendent ‘thalis, ‘addigais’ and ‘maanga maalai’ from Tamil Nadu, bridal finery and ear ornaments from the Malabar coast, chokers from Kholapur, Thewa work from the Royal Atliers of Rajasthan, Jhumkas from the North and Gowrishankaram necklace from Chettinad. Also on display are Sarpech, a turban ornament that evolved from the Mughal practice of pinning a heron’s feather to the crest of the turban, Chettinad jewellery for men that has a huge pendant with a secret chamber which is strung along with rudraksha beads. Other significant pieces are kasu malai, necklace of coins; Kada, thick bangles that adorn the brides of Mughal empire; and Thandatti, an ear jewel worn in certain parts of Tamil Nadu.

Actor Suhasini Mani Ratnam inaugurated the exhibition, which will be on till July 15.
