Non-judiciary departments to move out of district court complex

M. Balaganessin

These offices have been a major hindrance for starting new courts: Advocates

PUDUKOTTAI: All the non-judiciary offices housed for decades at the campus of district court complex here will be vacated shortly to accommodate more courts.

The court campus, built on the model of Madras High Court, houses a few non-judiciary departments too, including the Treasury Office, Sub-Treasury office and printing press. The location of these offices has been a major hindrance for the Judiciary Department in either starting new courts or expanding the existing ones, according to advocates.

The Pudukottai lawyers have been insisting on vacating the non-judiciary departments for the past few years.

Madras High Court Judge S. Rajeswaran held a meeting with Collector A. Suganthi here on Friday and impressed upon her the need for vacating these departments. He also explained the space constraint being faced by the judiciary departments.

“I love this architectural style of the Pudukottai court which is a replica of the Madras High Court,” Justice Rajeswaran, who is also the Portfolio Judge for Pudukottai district, told the advocates at a function held here later.

Justice Rajeswaran said Law Minister Durai Murugan and the district administration had a positive approach in extending all possible assistance for the provision of infrastructure to courts in the district. Describing the Collector as an official with “down-to-earth” vision, the Judge expressed his hope that the district administration would extend maximum support to the judiciary in this regard. “We should take maximum advantage of the assistance available from the Collector,” he told the advocates. He also sought a memorandum from the Bar Association to this effect for follow-up action.

Earlier, Pudukottai Bar Association president A. Ravichandran pleaded with the Judge for taking steps in this regard. He also wanted courts including that of Additional Judicial Magistrate court to be started in Pudukottai.
