KOLKATA: S. Praveena of Tamil Nadu bagged a double winning the under-16 and under-12 girls’ singles titles in the Calcutta Punjab Club AITA talent series here on Friday. Praveena, unseeded in both categories, was the biggest surprise of the tournament as she won the under-12 title defeating local favourite and top-seeded Shreya Das 3-5, 4-2, 4-1. She then showed her mettle again winning the under-16 crown defeating another local girl Priyam Periwal 7-6(3), 6-3. Priyam had beaten top-seeded Tulana Nan in the semifinals. Unseeded Shubhankar Paul of Assam beat top-seeded Rishabh Shah of Bengal to lift the under-12 boys’ crown. But the prevalence of the unseeded players was broken in the boys’ under-16 final, which was won by top-seeded Shukrit Guha of Bengal. Guha beat second-seeded Statemate Sattwik Sinha Roy for the title. The results (Bengal unless specified): Boys’ singles: Under-16 (final): Shukrit Guha bt Sattwik Sinha Ray 6-2, 6-4. Semifinals: S. Guha bt Yuvraj Bains 4-0, 4-0; S. Sinha Ray bt Harsh Gurnani 4-0, 4-1. Boys’ singles: Under-12 (final): Shubhankar Paul (Asm) bt Rishabh Shah 4-2, 4-5(4), 4-2. Girls singles: Under-16 (final): S. Praveena (TN) bt Priyam Periwal 7-6(3), 6-3. Semifinals: P. Periwal bt Tulana Nan 4-0, 3-5, 4-1; S. Praveena bt Neha Prasad 5-3, 4-2. Girls’ singles: Under-12 (final): S.
